Our Goals

We would like to provide excellent and in-depth articles on Christianity for free online access of any Chinese readers.

In the preparation stage of this website (2002-2003), our main task is translating English articles. The main categories are Christianity and Humanities, Christianity and Science, Theology, and Christian Ethics. Since 2003, our website has also been collecting original Chinese writings, including writings from seminary faculties, or excellent works of seminary students, or some Christian scholars.

We believe that many ideas about Christianity should be promoted. Unfortunately, the publishing business among Chinese Christian communities are limited geographically and financially. Many Chinese readers are unable to reach any such thought. Therefore, one of the goals of our website is to break through these barriers and provide free access for Chinese readers everywhere.

This website is more concerned with integrating faith with academic excellence. When education is getting popular and the level higher among Chinese people, we hope we could provide them a free and accessible collection of articles that would discuss the faith in a deeper way.

Our Story

The idea of a website was raised by Daniel Cheung in the summer of 2001 to Prof. Kai Man Kwan and a group of friends who were interested in theology (in a non-professional way). Daniel was about to go to the US for his Ph.D. study then. Daniel also talked with an editor, Lawman Lo, of Christian Times, a Christian weekly newspaper in Hong Kong. He agreed to have a joint venture with Daniel and offered to host our website within the Christian Times website, to make future requests for copyrights, and so on.

Later, there were supports from some Christian scholar friends, like Dr. Alex Yu at Arizona State University and Mr. Toby Yip at Simon Fraser University. Then we contacted Byron Barlowe, the person-in-charge of the largest English Christian article website, Leadership University of Campus Crusade for Christ, and asked for copyrights to translate its articles. This process took us a long time and there were many ups and downs. At times we thought we should give up. Finally Byron's generosity and broad vision that transcends institutional backgrounds made this happen. We signed an agreement in August, 2002.

Meanwhile, we have been recruiting translators to work on those articles. Since some articles are difficult and long, and all the translators are busy with their studies or work, the progress is slow.

In May 2003, we invited Dr. Kevin Cheng at China Graduate School of Theology in Hong Kong to be one of our editors. In the same year, we started collecting original Chinese articles. In 2004, we contacted other English websites or periodicals for permission to translate their articles.

Our Organization

Our team is constituted by several voluntary Christian scholars and co-workers and it operates independently of any organization. Christian Times is in partnership with us, responsible for applying for copyrights, hosting our website, providing search engine, doing promotion, etc.

Since we are a voluntary organization, we have not had any financial difficulties and we would like to have a very simple division of labor and administrative hierarchy.

Editor-in-chief:

In charge of editorial and administrative work, including liaison with various organizations

Editors:

In charge of reviewing and polishing translated articles, soliciting and accepting articles

Secretaries:

To assist the Editor-in-chief in various administrative work and secretarial work, e.g., formatting articles, keeping records, etc.

Translators:

To translate articles from English to Chinese

Other Co-workers:

Webmaster, temporary helpers, etc.
